Tell Me A Story, Grandad

I wrote Tell me a Story, Grandad as a result of telling a few stories to my grandchildren. They liked them and I enjoyed telling them, so writing the stories down in book form was a natural development. I also knew a talented artist who was interested in being involved in the project.

Tell me a Story, Grandad is a book based in present-day London. There are ten interconnected stories and characters, like ‘Bob’s House in the Clouds’ and ‘My Friend with No Name.’ All invite you to join them in a place somewhere between reality and the world of the imagination. Each story is illustrated by a picture with a specific colour and, like the stories, they are interlinked.           

The book is for children aged between four and eight, yet it is also for readers who are much older than this. I hope the book will be read not just by children, but by parents or grandparents as bedtime stories for their children or grandchildren. Hopefully, mums, dads, nans and grandads will add their own imagination and details so that each story becomes theirs as much as mine.

Teebu the Leopard

Strazz opened her mouth wide and tried to take a nip at Teebu but Teebu backed away only to bump into another hyena who also tried to take a nip but she quickly got out of the way. She was now surrounded by hyenas and they all tried to take a bite of her as their noisy howls went up in the air. The howls got louder and louder as they continued their attack on Teebu but she was quick and kept out of the circle that they had made around her and quickly fled from their midst.

In the last story, ONE MILLION BEETLES, all the animals of the Forest and their Hunters meet on the night of The Moon of Blood and, through the intervention of the light of these million fireflies, form an understanding for everlasting peace between them.

Tales Of Robin Hood And His Merry Men

Robin Hood was a legendary English outlaw and folk-hero who appears in ballads from the thirteenth century. He lived through the reign of Henry II, Richard I and John. He feuded with the Sheriff of Nottingham and lived in Sherwood Forest with a band of followers, his ‘Merry Men’. They robbed the rich to give to the poor. Among Robin’s companions were Little John, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlett and Alan-A-Dale.

It is said that Robin was born in about 1160 at Locksley, Nottinghamshire. Ancient ballads abound with anecdotes of his personal courage, skill in archery, generosity and great popularity. He protected women and children with knightly chivalry. The first literary mention of Robin Hood was in William Langland’s celebrated poem Piers Plowman (c. 1377).
